Remove heads and oil pan, unbolt connecting rods, push rod and piston assembly out through top of block. remove the heads ,remove the oil pan, unbolt the rod caps, then push the pistons up ,and out of the bore , then remove the wrist pin from the piston & the rod will be off. very important info. below. before removing the rod caps number them with a # stamp to the corresponding cylinder. 1-8 & also # the rods. you want to be sure to put them back in the same bore, & also the same cap with it's mate rod, if you don't replace them. number everything to the corresponding cylinder, pistons also. there may be a wear ridge on the top of the cylinder walls. if there is you may have to remove it so you don't break the rings. you can rent, or purchase a ridge removing tool at an auto supply store.
You'll need a special fixture and a press. Check with a local engine builder to see if they will do it for you.
a press
Chevy pistons are an interference fit that requires the rods to be heated in a special heater and the wrist pin installed while they are hot. To remove a piston requires special tooling to support the piston and it is pressed out on a hydraulic press. Its a job for a machine shop not for the weekend warrior.
There are small clips on the end of the rods. You have to remove the clips and then you can remove the hydraulic rods.
Push rods bend when there is no more clearance between valves and that no. 3 piston. There could be a foreign object sitting on top of that piston...or those valves set too tight.
PUSH rods and rocker arms... yes.
Out of car method. Remove the head and sump Undo the con rods from the crank, then slide the con rod & piston out. In car method. Drain the coolant Remove the cylinder head(s) Raise the car. Drain the oil Remove the sump. Undo the con rods from the crank. Push up the piston and con rod assembly. On some vehicles it is not possible to remove the sump in situation. A good home workshop manual will be a real help in doing this job.
