How do you change a wheel bearing on a Honda CRV.

1. Jack up the car and remove the wheel.

2. Remove the nut on the spindle - note it has a dimple locking it into a keyway on the spindle. You may have to release the dimple using a hammer and a small screw driver but careful not to damage the nut or the spindle. The nut might have a 32 mm hex or something. I used a 1 1/4 inch socket.

3. Remove the brake pad and brake pad mounting bracket. The rotor is held on with 2 Phillips head screws. Remove those and use (2) 8 mm screws to jack out the rotor. There are (2) 8 mm tapped holes in the rotor for this purpose.

3. Push the splined shaft back in the hub. You may need a wheel puller to do this. I rented one from Advance Auto. They refund all of your money if you bring it back on time and in good condition. Do not push the splined shaft too far, just enough to loosen it. Otherwise you are trying to jack the axle shaft back into the differential.

4. The hub assembly is fastened to the frame with 3 different bolts going through rubber bushings. Remove the bolts by backing out the bolts. Not that the rear most nut is welded on. It has a cam to adjust the alignment of the wheel. You will need to re-align the wheel after you reassemble the wheel.

5. At this point you should be able to remove the wheel hub assembly, however it is still attached to the emergency brake cable.

6. Remove 2 screws holding the emergency brake cable. Remove the springs on the emergency brake. Remove the 2 clips holding the emergency brake on to the hub assembly. Each clip has a slot with a flat ended pin through it which needs rotated 90 degrees. You can depress the clip with a screw driver and rotate the clip. The cable is spring loaded and has a swaged nut on the end. Pull this with a pair of pliers until you can slip it over the grooved cable retainer.

7. The actual hub with containing the wheel studs is pressed into the inner race of the bearing. This is a light press fit, you may be able to tap it out with a hammer and a plug. A socket will work if you don't mind beating on your tools.

8. Putchase a new wheel bearing. Take the bearing and the hub assembly, (the part with the 3 arms that bolt to the car) to a good shop. They will remove the snap ring holding the bearing in it's pocket, press out the old bearing and press in the new bearing. YOu can now re-assemble everything in the reverse order that you took it out.

Honda quoted me a minimum of 5 hours at $65 per hour in labor. I purchased a bearing for $67.00 and had the bearing replaced for about $20.00.
