How do you change the cigarette lighter in a Mazda miata?
The cigarette lighter is locked into the radio console bezel that surrounds the radio, HVAC controls, etc. The bezel is not very easy to remove. First you must unscrew the shifter knob. Then remove the center console - two screws in the armrest console, then you must pry up the power window switch with a very thin putty knife, unplug and remove it, and then remove the screw beneath it. Then the center console will lift up and out of the way, exposing two screws at the bottom of the bezel surrounding the radio and containing the cigarette lighter. Remove those two, and then the bezel can be carefully pried loose from the dash - It is held in by metal tangs.Once this bezel is loose from the dash panel, you can unplug the airbag switch and cigarette lighter lead, and it's free.The lighter itself is held in place by an orange collar surrounding the metal body of the lighter - it is a one-way installation with little plastic fangs that press through the bezel and lock the orange fitting into place. Attempt to remove this at your own risk, you risk breaking the bezel. I opted to snap off the one-way fangs that hold it into the bezel from the rear and replace it, it's part of the factory part you get from the Mazda dealer anyway. Assembly is the reverse of disassembly, etc.This is a fiddly non-trivial project.

I have changed the cigarette lighter element myself. It is a 60 minute procedure which requires removing the dashboard bezel.. Not a job for the clumsy or faint of heart. Takes a bit of finesse to properly remove dashboard bezel i.e numerous small screws etc. Wouldnt recommend doing it to a first timer..

You can cut a washer with the OD of the bezel and the ID of the lighter. Install the washer on the lighter, place the lighter into the bezel hole, place another washer on the back side of the bezel and then screw on the lighter retainer sleeve. It is all easy to do. Pull shift lever handle straight up and off the lever. Use small screw driver to wedge out lever bezel, pull out bulb, remove bezel. You see there are 2 screws below you have to remove. Use small screw driver to wedge out 4wd handle bezel, pull out bulb, remove bezel. remove 2 screws at the bottom of the storage bin. You may have to pull 4wd shift all the way backwards. Console should then come out.

Inside the panel opening at the top are two 8mm.hex head bolts that hold the bottom of the radio inplace. Next remove the trim bezel around the radio/climate control module. Insert the hook tool under the bezel and pull firmly. Work all the way around the bezel to release all the clips. Pull the unit out and remove all the wiring conectors. Now you have four 8mm. hex head bolts to remove and your radio is out.

Make sure the one you get WILL fit a Saturn and isn't just one for "most GM vehicles". To remove the lighter you will need to remove the panel on the driver's side, just below the radio bezel, it just pulls off. Once you have the panel off you will need to unclip the lead to the back of the lighter and unclip the light on the bottom. It's behind the passenger side headlight Bezel. Remove the grill, then you can remove the bezel and you will see it. It's almost impossible to turn due to the limited space around it (nice engineering Jeep). If you have a set of 90 degree needle nose piers you should be ok. I didn't and had to really fight with it.
