Quite easy to remove and fit in a VW Sharan Nov 00 (New Shape) but be careful not to cause damage, especially to the dash facia which can easily crack. Obtain two small flat head screw drivers (or two strong knives or similar), open the cupholder and gently slip each one quite far into the top right and top left between the cup holder's mount and the dash. This is where the lugs are that hold it in. Once inserted gently pull/twist/jiggle the knives and with your third hand gently pull the cupholder until the cupholder and its mount slide out. There is no benefit in removing the radio and/or CD player below.
