yOU WOULD NOT IT IS ILLEGAL TO HAVE A NON LIGHTED TAG
No it is not illegal, as long as you have operational tail lights, brake lights, signal lights and a plate light.
The number plate light is usually on the same circuit as the head lights.
the fuse should be labelled tail lights.(whats the problem with no. plate lights?)
Rear license plate lights replacement require that you remove the entire frame with reverse lights. Remove the 3 cover bolts on the inside of trunk, remove license plate, remove the for bolts holding frame to tyrunk lid, slide unit down and out and you will have to twist the bulb sockets and remove the bulbs and install in reverse.
The license plate lights are not in a separate fuce by it seft. They are the same as your side marker lights. So, check if your side marker lights are working and if they are them is a bad license plate light bulb.
You can remove the panel inside the back of the car. From there you can access your tail lights and your tag lights.
Radio fuse
Remove tire and inner fender well and change it from there. Other option is to remove the licence plate and reverse lights, reach through to the tail lights.
1. Open the trunk and reach behind/above the license plate to find the backside of the two licence plate lights. 2. Turn them each about an 1/8 of a turn to remove the light and an associated plastic housing. Remove the lights from the plastic housings (this was difficult ... apparently they get stuck with age). Replace the old lights with new ones purchased at an auto parts store. 3. Put the plastic housings with new lights back into from where they came.
The owners manual indicates fuse # 12 in the Fascia fuses is for the number plate and a number of other things including Hazard lights.

It is a very simply designed plate, with no embellishments. Usually ceramic, but some are porcelain.
