Just changed right side tail light, on the back guard on 2006 Mazda 6 sports hatch
Step1. take off plastic cover and remove 12mm baby seat bolt on middle of plastic boot lip. Then remove plastic lip vertically up, lifting gently from each end.
Step2. hinge downward from the top the plastic piece in middle of cargo hook piece at the back of the boot and nearest the tail light to expose 10mm bolt. Remove this hook and its surround
Step3. move floor carpet out of the way to take off side cover on side of boot by turning using has 2 plastic knobs. then take off hard plastic cover on floor which hides car hack (on right side of car, or equivalent on left side)
Step 4. behind cover there is a plastic plug with centre piece which can be pulled out by fingernails or small knife. Pull the whole plug out. This makes boot liner more flexible
Step5. from side of boot liner near removed boot lip. carefully lift liner upward so both hooks in liner pull clear of body. the liner can then be moved out of the way to access two 10mm nuts holding on tail light
Step6. the closer 10mm nut is easy, unscrew outer lamp holder a quarter turn and remove lamp holder to access second 10mm nut.
The inner lamp holder is best removed when you have pulled the tail light, straight back, pushing from the inside. The side of the tail light has a slot to the side of the mudguard.
Sounds complicated, but takes a half hour for the full job the first time being extra careful.
(Thanks to Ringwood Mazda for advice from parts and service guys, and where I bought the tail light, I have no affiliation with them, just a customer.)
The screws that hold the tail light in place are accessible only after you raise the hatchback or lower the tailgate. the screws are usually TORX drive
