Just changed one on a 1994.
1. Drain down the radiator.
2. Disconnect ground cable from battery. (Record all radio settings before
disconnecting battery).
3. Remove the (2 screws) cover from throttle cables (8 mm socket).
4. Remove air cleaner - to - throttle body air tube. ** (10 mm socket)
5. Remove serpentine belt.
6. Remove alternator and set aside. (1/2" socket)
7. Remove the three bolts which hold the thermostat (10 mm socket).
8. Clean the mounting surfaces.
9. Place new thermostat into the block. Make sure the bleed is on top and
the spring side placed is inside the block.
10. Reassemble in reverse order and refill with antifreeze.
11. Check for leaks.
** Carefully inspect the throttle body air tube for cracks or holes. These usually occur on the bottom side of the tube where it flexes.

Locate thermostat, on 40 HP it is on the left side of the motor near the top of the water jacket, left side from the back. It is held on by 4 bolts. Remove the flywheel cover, then remove the four bolts holding the thermostat/poppet valve cover. Pull out the thermostat. Be sure to note of the direction in which the thermostat is facing before removal. Put in new thermostat in reverse order. You may need a new gasket.

If you are saying that at highway speeds it is running at 40 degrees celcius (and it isn't extremely cold out), I would say that your thermostat is sticking open. I know you put a new one in, but every now and again a new thermostat will either stick open or shut. If you do the work yourself, what you can do to test the thermostat is to remove it and put it in a pot of boiling water, you should see it open up. Now remove it from the water and watch it, it should close up in a short amount of time, if it doesn't you need a new thermostat. If it is working, I suggest making sure that the cooling system is completely full with no air in the system. If this doesn't work, you might want an expert to take a look at it. Hayden
