Just learned this the hard way today after trying to do it myself. The ball joint will not come out until you remove the brake caliper and rotor. Too time consuming for a do it yourselfer in my opinion...I had the shop down the street replace the ball joint for 1.1 hours labor (about $80).

There is 4, 2 on each side behind the front wheels, You have a upper and lower ball joint. 1 on each controll arm.
Follow the upper radiator hose from the radiator to the engine. It will lead you to the thermostat housing. Drain coolant from radiator, remove upper radiator hose from engine, remove the two bolts holding the thermostat housing to engine, remove housing, remove thermostat.
check to see if your transfer case has to much fluid in it . remove upper plug .
It is between the upper and lower intake manifold. The gasket is an o-ring type.
Should be in housing at the end of upper radiator hose
Im basing this answer off my 97 blazer ls 4wd. Both upper and lower ball joints are bolt on so u will need to remove the bolts and the ball joints should fall right off.
On the poppet bank under the upper intake manifold.
1. Jack up the vehicle and remove the tire. Remember to set the brake, use chock blocks and jack stands. 2. You will need a second jack under the A-arm, remove the cotter pin and nut on the upper or lower ball joint. 3. Using a "pickle" fork (a special tool used to separate ball joints), place the fork between the ball joint and the mount. Hit with hammer until the joint seperates. 4. Replace new joint in reverse order of removal.
you need a pickle fork to drive between the control arm and the ball joint to separate them.
remove the thermostat housing bolts 13mm or 14mm (it is atacched to your upper radiator hose) and remove thermostat clean intake surface and housing replace with a new a gasket anf you are done
Raise this corner of the vehicle at the frame. Remove the wheel and support the lower control arm. Remove brake caliper and rotor. Unplug ABS sensor if so equipped. If T-10 (4WD) not S-10 (RWD): Remove CV axle nut at hub. Loosen upper ball joint nut. Separate upper ball joint from spindle using large hammer to knuckle or ball-joint fork. Remove upper ball joint nut, then push upper control arm up away from spindle. Loosen lower ball joint nut, then separate from spindle. Remove lower ball joint nut. If T-10: lower spindle and remove from vehicle. If S-10: raise lower control arm enough to give you working room. Use a drill or chisel or grinder to remove four rivets holding ball joint to control arm. Secure new joint to control arm using supplied hardened steel bolts and nuts and lock washers. Continue reassembly as reverse of disassembly. Align wheels, as the alignment is now incorrect.
