Not much you can do to repair that other than replacing it.
the speed sensor is located on the front of your rear end. it is held in by one bolt.
This engine has no turbine or turbo. Although the 1996 Ford Ranger does not have a turbine or turbo, it does have a turbine shaft speed (TSS) sensor. It is located inside the automatic transmission.

According to my Haynes repair manual, 1996 and later models do not use a conventional speedometer cable. They use an electronic speedometer and a vehicle speed sensor (VSS)

On transmission by where one of the axles attaches to it. My Haines book says it's on top of the trans mission just under the mass air flow sensor. You have to remove the ducting & M.A.F.Sensor to get to the speed sensor but removing the speed sensor looks tricky.
