The shift cable has failed.
I live in Forest Park, Ga, and my gear shift got stuck and would not move, had it checked out and it was the gear shift cable, the price at Hessessy Pontiac was $85.00 but i found it at Terrry Cullen Chevrolet for $66.00 and $30.00 to install...
Cable too slack.
The shift cable usually doesn't break. The bushings on the shifter inside the cabin have been known to break, or the clips that hold the cable to the tranny fall off allowing the cable to come off the tranny. I would check these points first before replacing the cable.

Escort doesn't have a gear shift cable. It has a gear shift rod. To remove it: Remove the shift control rod nut and bolt Take off the shift knob. Remove the console. Remove the shift boot. Pry out the shifter spring. Lift the shift ever out of the housing. Take the nuts that hold the shift housing on the end of the extension bar. Take the extension bar from the transaxle, lower the shift housiing and take the shift control rod from the transmission.
The problem is the bushing inside the end of the gear shift cable has worn or broken to the point the cable has come off the stud which is in the transmission linkage. A replacement bushing can be found on E-bay or by e-mailing a seller at the following address: ieshouston(at)yahoo.com Use the ampersand symbol in place of the word "at" when sending an e-mail.
