I just gotten a quote for a 2001 ranger 2wd 3.0 automatic. The quote was $550 to replace the rear main seal. This is from a privately owned repair shop.
On the front of the intake manifold
Dana 216 FBI (Dana 44)
If it is the rear sensor, it will be in the differential. If it is a front sensor, it will be located at each front wheel.
if 4x2 only 1 differential which is the pumpkin between your rear axle, if 4x4, there will be a transfer case at the front of the vehicle coming off of the transmission going to front drive shaft and front differential.
Use an 80-90wt gear oil
157- 213ft lbs
they cannot or the clutches will burn out

my ford 2001 ranger had the same thing happen to me i sent to the ford delear for repair and it was a missing fuse so check all fuses
Inside the tube next to the front differential there is a sleeve that is actuated over the gear locking the diff into 4x4. You can see a plastic cover over the motor used to engage the lock.
