there is a sensor on the right side of the thermostat housing that tells the trans when to shift. replace that and you will be able to shift to 3rd gear. took me some time to find mine on my 2000 sportage.....
you probably have a bad ground in the rear taillight assembly common problem

Well the HOLD button is for keeping the car in 2nd and 3rd gear
Lift up the trunk and pull the felt cardboard away from right below the third taillight, and you can get to the lightbulb housings...there are two...from there, the hardest part is finding the bulb size (standard stuff for auto parts stores). Takes all of ten min. tops.
This is an easy one. Remove the two screws that hold the taillight to the body. They are located just inside the tailgate. The taillight has two tabs the fit into slots opposite the screws, so you'll need to swing the assembly as if you're opening it like a door. The brake light is the top bulb on the back of the taillight. This is assuming that you weren't referring to the "3rd eye" brake light, which I haven't done.
I have no idea but mine does the same thing. Shifting into 3rd gear I guess 80 -100km/h in cold weather only. As soon as it heats up it shifts fine. The sportage is programmed not to shift to 3rd until the engine is at least 155 degrees
The 1st of November 2009 is 90 days after the 3rd of August 2009. The 5th of May 2009 is 90 days before the 3rd of August 2009.
