Drain the coolant from the cooling system. Locate the big fat hose leading from the top of the radiator down to a metal fitting located on the engine block and it will be clamped with a hose clamp. Loosen the clamp and remove the hose. The fitting it was attached to is where the cooling system thermostat is located. Unbolt the fitting and remove the old thermostat. Make sure that you have the correct new thermostat - thoroughly clean the surfaces and replace the gasket and insert the new thermostat and re-bolt the housing to the engine and re-install the radiator hose. Installation is the reverse of removal.

To replace the thermostat on a 1998 Cadillac, locate the area you will be working in. The thermostat is located at the rear of the engine on the drivers side. Then locate the upper hose. Remove the upper hose from the housing and disconnect the unit. You can then safely replace the thermostat piece.
