I removed the oil dipstick, then the huge plastic engine cover, put the dipstick back in, then located the thermostat housing on the front side of the engine (as you sit in car) just behind and to the left of the A/C compressor (again, as you sit in car). I then made sure all coolant was drained and then removed the hose by loosening the hose clamp then gently rotating the hose as I pulled on it. Then removed the ( I think 2 or 4 ) small bolts holding the thermostat housing on and pulled off the housing. There is an o-ring there which may need replacing and the parts place should give a new one with new thermostat. The thermostat only goes in one way so it is pretty easy. Installation of the rest is the reversal of removal. Good luck.
The thermostat on a 97 Volkswagen Jetta 4 cylinder is replaced by removing the upper radiator hose, unbolting the thermostat housing, and removing the thermostat. A new gasket is then put in place and the replacement thermostat installed.
The thermostat on a VW Jetta VR6 is replaced by removing the upper radiator hose and unbolting the radiator housing. The thermostat is then removed from its housing and a new thermostat installed.
You have a serious task ahead of you. Is this a 6 cylinder or four ? If it is a six cylindr, you need to take off the serpentine belt, all the plastic cover. You are looking at least 4 hrs of labor at 80 dollars per hr, plus get the best termostat 60 dollars and 400 plus dollars later you have a new termostat, while you there change the water pump...

Remove the water from the cooling system. Remove the water lines from the heater core. Remove the heater core retaining bolts. Reverse the process to install the new heater core.
