On a 2002 Nissan Altima there are two bolts that you will need to take off so that the light assembly will come out backwards. The trick is on the 2002 the bolts are hidden by the electrical plug and wiring. There is a white electrical plug that must be pulled forward to expose the nut on top and a small electrical tie-down that you pull off on the bottom. Once the electrical wiring is out of the way the nuts are right there in plain sight. These nuts are an 8mm head. After you loosen the nuts the light assembly will pull out, but you'll want to pull straight back. There are two pins on the outside edge of the assembly that hold the light from falling to the side but they allow the light to be pulled straight back. The light bulbs sockets in the assembly all twist out and then the bulb are just pulled straight out of the sockets. My brake light bulb was $2.50 at the dealer.
If you remove the panels from the interior of the trunk you should find the bolts that hold the taillamp assembly to the body of the car. Simply remove the nuts and this releases the lamp assembly.
you take out the broken bulb and put in the good one YES BUT HOW DO YOU REPLACE IT???
Carefully insert a thin flat (smooth) blade between the vertical center of the license lamp lip (facing you) and the bumper cover. Carefully pry to raise the lamp frame/lip away from the bumper cover. Grasp the edge and pull outward and toward you to remove the lamp assembly. Twist the bulb socket counter clockwise and pull it out of the lamp assy. Pull the bulb straight out and replace with new. Replace the lamp assy by positioning it exactly as was as you pulled it out, then merely push/snap it back.

It is pretty straight forward, remove the pins holding the trunk liner in place on the side you are working on. Pull the liner off to reveal the wiring and bolts holding the rear tail lamp assembly. Then remove two nuts holding the assembly in place. Do not scatch the lamp assembly or stretch the wires - having someone to help will make it much easier. Last just twist the particular lamp holder free and replace the bulb.

I couldn't replace just the bulb. You have to buy a whole new lamp. $5-10 at autozone.
No, most definitely not. A small flat screw driver to pop out the inner plastic piece and then popping out the larger outer shell will be easier. Once you have done it you will develop a feel for it. Afterwards two nuts(don't drop them) and freeing some slack on the wiring past the grommet, and you will be set to free the tail lamp.
The light assy has to be removed to take the bulbs out.
