You mean the seal that's near the timing belt and crank shaft pulley?

This may be a big job as it involves removing the engine mount on that side of the car (and supporting the weight of the engine with something else), the alternator, Power Steering gear, timing belt cover, and timing belt (as well as the wheel and fender apron). So while you are at it you may as well replace the timing belt and the crank shaft oil seal which is another possible location of oil leaks. Make sure you know what you are doing in terms of proper timing belt fitting, timing alignment and tension. If you are not confident in this you had better get a mechanic to do it.

My mechanic said something about the oil pump shaft may be grooved requiring some kind of sleeve and that you can get all the parts for the timing belt and seal replacements in some kind of timing belt kit. He also said if you have a leak over this area of your car then the oil may have affected the timing belt, requiring it to be replaced anyway. He quoted me around $400 - $600 Australian to do this entire job (Feb 2011).

When removing the seal(s) use a paper wrapped screwdriver or seal removal tool as you do not want to scratch any part of the engine in this area as it can cause the new seal to leak.

Tap in the new seal carefully using a large piece of pipe or large socket so that the seal is inserted squarely. You may want to grease the outer lip of the seal.

As always, make sure the car is securely lifted on ramps or jack stands with the rear wheels blocked and the handbrake firmly engaged.
