Backwashing is done to clean the filter media in sand and DE systems. Cartridge filter systems don't have a "backwash" provision. You just remove the cartridges and wash off the dirt and debris with a hose.

Where does pool backwash go?
It goes out the backwash line. This is usually either plumbed into the line, and either goes into the sewer, or out on the ground. Some setups have a hose that you unroll, and attach to a port on the valve. I found my discharge by putting the handle on "backwash", turning the pump on, and looking around! Mine happened to go out into the back ditch. Took all of about 10 seconds to find it.
If a pool has no skimmer where do you put the hose to pick up dirt?
They use to have an adapter that would go from the hose to the inlet side of the pool which in turn went to the pump, most above ground pool use flex hose from the skimmer basket of the pool to the pump, you may just have to put a tee fitting in from the inlet side of the pool and add another inlet just so that you can vacuum, and cap this when you are finished vacuuming, this would be on the outside of the pool this would be added anywhere from the pump back to the pool on the inlet side.

If the pool is really dirty then it is best to set the filter to waste.
When do you add DE to a pool?
You add D.E. to a pool when you do a fresh filter clean. You also add D.E. if you have to backwash your pool more than normal. When you backwash the pool it is also dumping the D.E. out so it needs to be replaced to keep the grids covered so the pool can filter properly. Hope it helped
