On the 4 cylinder engine, there is an belt tensioner right under the alternator pulley and slightly back. It keeps spring loaded tension on the belt so that you don't have to ever adjust the belt tension. Put a 15mm wrench on the tensioner pulley bolt and push towards the back of the car. This will allow enough play in the belt that it can be slipped off the pulley. Be careful when replacing that the grooves are properly seated in all the pulleys or the belt can be destroyed in very short order.
The V-6 engine is probably similar.
Good luck!
Pry on the tensioner to get the tension off and remove the belt. There should be a schematic on the fan shroud for the routing of the belt. If it isn't there , draw one before you remove it. If the belt is already off, go to a used car lot and find a car just like yours and draw a schematic.
I've had to do this twice. The only way I could figure was to support the engine on a jack, remove the right side engine mount, replace the belt, and replace the mount. Not a good engineering job Pontiac.
Be prepared to spend a couple hours MINIMUM getting that thing out. It (like everything else in the engine) is a pain in the A$$. Start by purchasing a Haines manual, there are very straightforward instructions there. I have replaced 3 of them in my 97 (not sure why it's going through so many). It's not hard, just time consuming. Oh yeah, don't loosen the tensioner like I did. It will move without having to do that.
If it is not serpentine - loosen the alternator mounting bolts and it should pivot allowing you to remove and replace If serpenting - relieve pressure on the tensioner and belt should be able to be removed
disconnect batt. take off belt, jack pass. side frame remove two frame mount bolts 18mm bolts (leave rt side wheel on) lower frame two bolts at the side of alter. one at front. unplug and disconnect wire. 20 mins.work
If it is a serpentine belt - back off on the automatic belt tensioner
Use a socket or breaker bar for leverage
If it's serpentine, pull on an idler. if not, there will be a bolt through a slot on bracket to allow movement.
I just bought a Pontiac Montana 2004 and dont know how to close the rear windows
maybe its your alternator, if its giving off a weak enough charge, when you put the brake lights on, it drains too much power to run your engine. to check the alternator, start car, and remove the positive cable from your battery with some accesories running. if your car sputters, or stalls, just replace the alternator. hope this helps.
