1. Open the boot
2. Remove the two screws (Torx head - use T25 bit) on the front of the rear light assembly and carefully pull it out. (The rest of the light is held in by two 'poppers' so a gentle tug should pull it out.)
3. Turn the bulb holder anti-clockwise and pull it out.
4. Replace the bulb and put back together in the reverse order.

undo 2 screws on outside edge, then reach through hole at rear from inside boot, and unscrew plastic collar. For those with newer models, this answer is still valid. I first saw this questionHow do you replace the brake light bulb in an 2006 ford fiesta? But my car which is 2006 still has the plastic collar to unscrew. To change the 'High Level' brake light bulb - the one over the back window - open the hatch and remove the two rubber grommets from behind the light unit. Insert a flat screwdriver blade into each hole, push down the spring clip, and the light unit will come out. Try not to damage the screen washer pipe attached to it. The bulb is an 18w wedge-fitting.Er... It isn't 18w, it's 16w. I didn't have my reading glasses on.
2 nuts in the trunk, unscrew those, then the light housing will pop off pry the plastic off and replace bulb.
You need to replace the brake pad sensors (there's only 2 - one for the front and one for the rear) and the light will reset itself.
