You don't. It has a D.I.S. ignition system and has no distributor or rotor. There are three coils mounted over spark plugs under coil pack cover (center top of motor) Each coil fires 2 pistons. They are not replaced as a tune up item. They are only replaced if faulty. Spark plugs should be replaced every 15,000 miles.
# Unplug the distributor connector from wiring harness connector # Loosen the distributor cap retaining screws # Label and disconnect the spark plug cables from the distributor cap # Lift the cap off of the distributor # Note in which direction the distributor spark pick-up is pointing then pull the rotor off of the distributor shaft
The Rotor has a small bolt that holds the Rotor on the shaft. Did you Loosen this bolt?
The easy way is to replace the entire distributor with a remanufactured unit. The hard way is to mark position of distributor rotor, remove the distributor from engine, reome cap & rotor, remove drive gear from the bottom of distributor , slide shaft up & out, remove pick up.reverse steps & reset ignition timing. IMPORTANT TO MARK LOCATION OF ROTOR BEFORE REMOVAL
The rotor only fits one way on to the distributor shaft.
There are 3 screws holding the distributor cap on. After removing the cap, there is a small Phillips head set screw holding the rotor in place on the shaft portion of the rotor.
It is directly under the rotor inside the distributor cap.It is directly under the rotor inside the distributor cap.
No
A 1989 Dakota uses the distributor pick up plate for the crank signal. It is the plastic plate under the rotor inside the distributor cap.
Remove the cap, line up the rotor to a point on the engine and mark it with a white chalk. un plug the wire harness, remove the hold down bolt, remove the rotor, then pull the dist. out. New dist. put rotor on and slide the dist. in and spin the rotor to the same place as marked before.

They are extremely rare! If you find one, hang on to it! Just kidding! All Thunderbirds with the supercharger as well as Cougars with supercharger have DIS...Distributor-less Ignition System. The computer fires the plugs without a distributor cap or rotor.
