You do not need to remove the rotor to replace the pads. I suggest you purchase a repair manual at any auto parts store. There you will find the info you need to perform simple repairs. on disc brake systems, the rotor is held in its place by the wheel lug nuts and once the wheel is removed, should actually be somewhat loose in your hand (if not VERY loose, depending on how worn your brake pads are). you will not be able to remove the rotors until you first remove the calipers. on most disc brake systems i have worked on, the caliper is held on my two hex head (3/8" hex, to be exact) bolts on the back (toward center of car) side of the caliper. loosen these bolts to the point that their threads are no longer engaged. they do not need to pull completely from the caliper. once the threads are free (the bolts will usually sit about 1/2" to 3/4" above flush with the caliper at this point), you should be able to pull the caliper away from the rotor radially (that is, toward the car door). once the caliper is free, be sure to hang it from a piece of wire or a coat hanger out of your way. DO NOT SUSPEND THE CALIPER BY THE BRAKE LINE. THIS CAN DAMAGE THE LINE OR FITTINGS, LEADING TO BRAKE FAILURE. at this point, the rotor should come right off. if it does not, it is probably rusted to the hub. try some penetrating fluid (i recommend PB Blast) and a rubber mallet to remove the rotor. some rotors also have holes for jacking bolts (a bolt thru the rotor to press on the hub, separating the two). in any case, use care not to warp or otherwise damage the rotor and if you use any penetrant or touch brake parts with your bare hands (not recommended), clean all parts with brake parts cleaner. the oils in penetrants and on your skin can lubricate the brake components, which will reduce effectiveness when braking. hope this helps!
