How do you replace the fuel filter located on a 1998 Mazda 626?

This applies to a 99 626 2.0l but I reckon the 98 car was identical. It's relatively straight forward but fiddly and a little messy. 1. It's a good idea to disconnect the battery. 2. Open the fuel filler cap to depressurise the system. (there are procdeures to completely depressurise but in my experience its not necessary). No need to leave it open, once the whooshing sound has finished, close it again. 3. Rrmove the airfilter box and airflow sensor assembly. It might be possible to do it without removing this but i found it easier to remove it first. 4. Now you should be able to see and access the fuel filter easily. undo the clamps and be prepared for a small amount of fuel spillage. 5. You'll need to remove the bolt that holds the fuel filter bracket to the car. 6. Remove the old fuel filter from the bracket, and insert the new one (yes it IS possible). 7. Refit the fuel hoses and reclamp them securely to the filter. 8. Reattach the bracket to the mounting point with the bolt. 9. Refit the airbox / airfilter assembly. 10. Making sure there is no spilt petrol left anywhere, and no smell of fuel, reconnect the battery. 11. Turning the key to the on position (without starting the car) should make the fuel pump re-pressurise the system. Make sure there is no fuel leaking. 12. Start the car. Run it for a while and check there is no fuel leaking. 13. Make yourself some tea and give yourself a pat on the back.
