passenger side of the block up front down low disconnect the two fuel lines. gas will leak from both but you only need to cap off the one coming from the back of the truck since its connected to the fuel tank only two 1/2 bolts hold the pump in place. after you remove it a dowel will fall down if you cant push it back up rotate your engine a bit at a time clockwise until you get it as far up as you can( it is pushed up and down by the cam to operate the pump) try holding it with a screw driver until you get the black lever on the fuel pump below it then just bolt in place hook up fuel lines and go
Drop the fuel tank. Take out fuel pump. Then replace. Be sure to detach your fuel lines (2) then detach the hose were you fuel up your truck at.

Empty and remove the fuel tank. It is inside the tank mounted with the level sensor. (remove it from the top)
the fuel pump is in the gas tank. you will either have to lower the tank or remove the bed from the vehicle in order to access it.

Take off the bed of the truck. 8 bolts from the under side. access to the pump is located at the top of the fuel tank. disconect the power to the pump at the batery or at the pump. unscrew ring around the fuel pump and lift out the pump. do steps in reverse to replace
The 1974 Chevy truck has a mechanical fuel pump with a built in pressure regulator.
they are fuel injected.
It sounds as if your pump is going out; you should replace it.
