ok .. if you open hood and look to ur right in the back where your spark plug wires connect that's where you ignition coil is .. mark all 6 wires whit the number coil it is hooked up to then remove all 6 sparg plug wires from the coils ....
now the easiest way is to take the whole icm and coilss out to replace then other wise have small tools to fit ... any way ... theres 2 bolts to the left of the coil packs and one conected down but your egr ... take those out .. not u have more room to work ..... unbolt the coil by the 2 bolst one on each side then carfully lift straight up and replacing is same as remove... hope i helped

How do you replace the ignition coil on John Deere 38X?
If you mean the STX 38, the ignition coil is underneath the top engine cover. First you must remove the circular screen cover on top of the engine. Remove the three small bolts inside the center cup and then remove the bolts holding down the outer ring. The outer ring and screen should lift right off with little effort. Then remove the bolts on the top-side portion of the engine cover (there are about 7 or 8 of them going around the engine) -one of them holds the oil dipstick tube in place. 3 of them bolt the cover directly down to the engine block. Once all of those are out, the engine shroud (cover) lifts right off and there, in the center of the motor is the ignition coil held down by 2 bolts. A single wire feeds the coil and the spark plug wire exits the coil. Remove the feed wire, remove the plug wire from the plug, unfasten and remove the old coil and replace. Reinstall the cover and upper screen assembly and you're all done. You'll need a 1/4 drive socket set and that's pretty much it. If you take your time, you should be done in 30 minuts or so. The ignition module on these is on the passenger side of the engine's front corner. It has six ignition wires coming out of it and these are the 'coils' that fire the spark plugs. The ignition module is under this bank of coils, mounted to the coil pack. In general, mark the ignition wires and coil pack so you know where to reconnect them, then remove the main wire harness connector. I think there are two fasteners, 6 or 8mm at each end of the connector. as you loosen these screws the connector will back out of its environment seal, dont force the removal until the screws are fully disengaged. The module should then have some peripheral fasteners to remove it from the firewall. Take the module complete to your friendly local auto parts store (FLAPS) and have them test it for free before you pony up for replacing it. Brace yourself for the cost. Salvage yards have these for much less but at greater risk. Sometimes the module has a thermal gasket/seal it is important to install this correctly to seal the electronics and heat sink the coil pack for maximum life. Dido's Lament
