Simply drain the system, disconnect the hoses and lines, unbolt the fan (2 screws), remove the retainers at the top, and it should come right out.

As long as you are taking it all apart, you should replace the radiator hoses, heater hoses, and accessory drive belt(s.) Be sure to get the gasket for the pump, and some hi-temp (red or blue) silicone to seal it up.
i think you might be talking about the heater hoses , if so it might be the heater control valve . the is a upper and lower radiator hose , but nothing should be between them.
