If you are smart, do not attempt!!!!!!! It is located under the exhaust manifold, attached to the timing housing, and is driven by the timing chain. You most disconnect one of only two engine mounts to get to it. We have quite a few tools and do most jobs on our own cars, and I can't count how many times I have been the store buying tools for this job, and we arent done yet. Pay someone to do it if you can afford to. GOod Luck. It would take a professional a while. Make sure the work is warranteed. Go to a good shop, cause if they screw up, it will be expensive. They disconnect alot of expensive sensors to get to the stupid water pump. While they are at it, have them put in a new thermostat, the water pump going out caused wear and tear on it, and they are relatively cheap, but they are right next to the water pump, so guess how much they cost to put in. Have fun. Hope that helped.
Answergood luck. i couldn't do it myself and i know quite a lot about cars, but even i couldn't handle this one. As a matter of fact i work at a car dealership, and they told me to send it out to another mechanic's shop because it was over 7 hours of labor. In the end my bill was $979.00 because they need to take off the timing chain to get to it. when that comes out, u might as well buy a new one since the old one is all stretched out. have fun!!The water pump on a 97 Chevy Malibu 4 cylinder is replaced by removing the engine accessories, drive belt, and radiator hoses.
