How do you replace the water pump on a 1997 Hyundai Elantra?

Disconnect the negative battery cable Drain cooling system if coolant is new keep it to reuse it Remove the accessory drivebelt Loosen the water pump pulley bolts,Remove the water pump pulley bolts and then remove the pulley Remove the alternator,note the position of the alternator bracket on the water pump;it must be installed in the same position when installing the water pump.Remove the alternator bracket bolts(there also water pump bolts)and then remove the other four bolts from the water pump Loosen the hose clamp and then disconnect the water pump coolant inlet pipe connection hose,detach the coolant inlet pipe from the block and then disconnect the coolant inlet pipe from the water pump mounting boss.Remove and discard old O-ring. Clean the bolt threads and the threaded holes in the engine to remove corrosion and sealant Compare the new pump to the old one to make sure they're identical Remove all traces of old gasket materials from the engine Clean the engine and water pump mating surfaces with laquer thinner or acetone Affix new gasket to the gasket mating surface of the pump with Gasgacinch or similar gasket adhesive Carefully attach the pump and gasket to the engine and thread the bolts into the holes finger tight Reposition the alternator bracket and then install the rest of the water pump mounting bolts,tighten water pump bolts to (15-20)torque in 1/4 turn increments Install a new O-ring in the groove at the front end of the coolant inlet pipe and lube the O-ring with coolant.Insert the coolant inlet pipe into the water pump mounting boss and then secure it to the block with the retaining bolt tighten the bolt securely.Reconnect the connection hose to the coolant inlet pipe tighten the hose clamp securely Install alternator install the water pump pulley and tighten the bolts secuerely Install the accessory drivebelt,tighten water pump pulley bolts to (72-84)torque,refill cooling system and check the drivebelt tension.

This answer is right from a Haynes repair manual and there is many things they don't tell you. If I would have known what I was in for, I would have never attemted this task. They fail to tell you that you have to remove the timing belt cover and it ain't a bad idea to unbolt the Power Steering pump and swing it away.Oh yeah, To get that timing belt cover off, you have to remove the bottom crankshaft pulley and loosen the tensioner to the a/c pump. The reason you have to remove the timing belt cover off is because it covers two bolts to the water pump. I never did get the crankshaft pulley bolt broke loose, even with an impact gun. I guess I'll take it to a garage to see if they can fix it.

I got the Crankshaft pulley off after almost $100 worth of tools and a whole day! None of that was even necessary in the end. I looked around on the internet and found that I could use a pipe to extend a wrench so that it rests on the street beneath the pulley, disconnect the plug wires from my coil packs and bump the starter for a split second. Took it right off in a second!! You can only do this with a manual transmission.
