I am going to assume that you have an Automatic Trans. More likely the trans is a 4L60 or 4L60E depends on the time of the year. The E Trans has a Bigger Electrical plug on the left side of trans lower side rear above the pan. That type of trans is all electric where the 4L60 is some electric but has a detent cable on the right side the runs up to the throttle body. They will use the same filter and are serviced the same. You will need a wide body drip pan to help catch the fluid. What I do is remove the all but 4 bolts from the pan.
Leave 2 up front and 2 in the back, then lossen the back ones so as to let the fluid to were it just starts to drain. Take the front bolts and loosen them up just a bit, then go back to the back bolts and loosen some more but don't take them out or oil is every where. Once it has slowed down then hold up the pan and remove the bolts and slowy lower the pan down and drain the pan.
Pull the filter off and don't forget to remove the Orange seal up in the hole of the filter tube. Now if it doesn't have one it has a metal seal type sleeve that has been installed. Becareful on removing the seal out of the hole as not to scratch the surface. You will need to use a hook type pick to get the seal out, on the sleeve you can use a screw driver to colapse the side in to pull it out. Once the seal is out take the new one, oil it up and slide it on the tube of the filter and install in the trans. The sleeve type you will need to install in the hole and push it up in till it seals on the case.
Wipe out the pan with a rag, there should be a square type magnet in the pan. If not then don't worry, but if so then take it out clean it off and place back in. The fine metal that is on it is normal, its the little bit bigger pieces that I would be concerned with. Place your gasket on the pan, don't need to use sealent but you can use a little dab to hold gasket. Now when you tighten the bolts USE A TORQUE WRENCH, trust me it works and run the bolts down to 120 Inch pounds not foot pounds. Once that is done then add about 3 quarts of oil and start your engine. Check the level of trans oil and add to the middle of the hash marks on the dip stick. Check for leaks and your done.
This is commonly a problem with the transmission filter or fluid. Replace the transmission fluid or have your transmission filter taken in for maintenance.
