just replaced a torsion spring on handle of Toro model 20023 21" personal pace took handle apart and screws that hold brass cross bar where spring fits into "replaced and it works"
To replace a broken garage door spring, you first need to determine the type of spring used; either torsion or side-mounted. To determine the type of spring, and then to replace the spring, there is a very good website that has all of the information available to replace and adjust the door springs. The website is at http://www.naturalhandyman.com/iip/infgar/infgar1b.html.
A torsion spring is a spring that gains mechanical energy when it is twisted. It is a flexible elastic object and is commonly found on old fashioned traps. Mouse traps have torsion springs. Torsion springs are purchasable on Amazon and eBay. Buying a mouse trap and removing the spring is also a good idea.
Torsion strength measures the largest torsion force the material can withstand and still spring back into its original shape.
Spring steel
This depends on upper or lower ball joints. If you need to replace the upper ball joints, you must replace the upper control arm. For the lowers, you will need a ball joint press, and some snap ring pliers. Be careful with the spring when taking the spindle apart from the control arms. (spring type suspension) Have to unload the torsion bar (Torsion Bar suspension) You will need a special tool to do this

when the friction plate is pressed by the pressure plate a torsional vibration is developed in order to dampen this vibration torsional springs are provided in the spring plate this springs are also called damper spring.
A torsion bar is used in an auto suspension. A torsion bar suspension, also known as a torsion spring suspension or torsion beam suspension, is a general term for any vehicle suspension that uses a torsion bar as its main weight bearing spring. One end of a long metal bar is attached firmly to the vehicle chassis; the opposite end terminates in a lever, the torsion key, mounted perpendicular to the bar, that is attached to a suspension arm, a spindle, or the axle. Vertical motion of the wheel causes the bar to twist around its axis and is resisted by the bar's torsion resistance. The effective spring rate of the bar is determined by its length, cross section, shape, material, and manufacturing process.
When you crank on the torsion bars you are changing their spring tension.

The onager was the largest siege engine in the Roman army. It was a one armed spring/torsion device nicknamed the "wild donkey" because of its powerful kick when fired. The onager was the largest siege engine in the Roman army.
