The "ESP" system helps correct oversteer and understeer by breaking the inner or outer wheel as needed to get the car back on a straight path. By pushing the ESP button you are turning it off and will see an illuminated yellow triangle on the instrument cluster. Turning the system off will allow the rear of your car to drift around turns and/or break traction on heavy accelleration.
It should tell you in the handbook. For the SLK it is turn the steering from lock to lock whilst the engine is running. May be the same for other Mercedes.

If you have a 1997 Mercedes Benz e420 but you are unable to turn off the esp button, it could be having a transmission fluid problem.
The ESP malfunction, on a Mercedes Benz E3 50, can only be fixed by changing the computer motherboard. The computer motherboard should only be changed by a certified mechanic.
After there has been a break in the in the power to the automobile there are three settings that need to be reset. The clock must be reset according to the instructions in the owner's manual. The ESP must be reset. This is done by starting the car and turning the steering wheel to the steering lock position on either side. Turn the steering wheel to the left or right until it cannot be turned further and then turn it in the opposite direction until it cannot be turned further. Confirmation that the ESP has been reset will be the ESP light on the dashboard going out. The radio must be reset. When you turn the radio on the display will read CODE and prompt you to enter your radio code. If you are fortunate enough to have the code enter it and press the button under the OK display. If you do not have the code or the code you have doesn't work you will need to call Mercedes Benz Customer service with the VIN number of the vehicle and probably confirm in some way you are the owner. They will give you the radio code they have on record. Enter that five digit number and press the button directly under the OK display to get the radio to accept the code. If the radio comes on it worked. If it didn't try getting the code from the nearest dealership.
