Amendment I
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances. Simply put, the first amendmend gives citizens of the U.S. the right to express how they feel with their voices (i.e. freedom of speech). This is not the case in most other countries.
Moreover, it gives us the rights to believe and practice any religion of our choosing (i.e. freedom of religion and choice) even if it is no religion at all.
The clause concerning assemblage protects the peoples' right to organize and attempt the creation new law or to change old law. It also protects our right to organize a workers' strike against a company.
One an be imprisoned and quite possibly executed in other nations for practicing what the U.S.A. recognizes as basic human rights.
When creating laws in America, bills are passed through the Legislative Branch (Congress) first and then sent to the Executive Branch (Presidency) where they are either signed into law or vetoed. Therefore, it's important to realize the grandeur of the amendment's first words as well: Congress shall no law. These words negate the possibility of such a law ever reaching the President--they stop it before it starts.
We need to look first at the words of the First Amendment:
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.
And, then reword it:
Neither the House of Representatives nor the Senate may make any law that sets up any religion as the national religion of the country. Nor can they make a law that prevents people from following any religion they choose. The same Representatives and Senators cannot make laws that prevent people from freely speaking, or that limits journalists from printing what they want. The people may not be prevented from gathering together publicly or privately in groups, nor can they be stopped from coming together to demand that the government correct what ever has been done wrong against the people, and to make right anything the government has done that is unfair or wrong.
The first amendment says you can believe in any religion, say what you think, write what you want, and meet with others peacefully.
The Seventh Amendment is like a rule that says if there is a disagreement about something, like money or property, you can have a jury decide who is right. It helps make sure that everyone gets a fair chance in a legal situation.
