In Excel 2003, you enable AutoSave by following these steps:
Click the save button.
Save the workbook as an Excel 2007 file instead of 97-2003 file.
When the Save As dialog box opens, go to the Tools menu in the top left, then pick General Options and you can do it from there.

If you have 2010, then you can open it and save it as a 2010 workbook. It won't open with Excel 2003 after that though so you cannot have the benefit of the extra rows in Excel 2003. That is one of the reasons for using 2007 or 2010.

open file in excel 2007 then press ribbon and go to Save as, you will see Excel 1997-2003 Workbook option, click on it and save file.
You can open a 2007 Excel spreadsheet with Excel 2003 if you save the file in Excel 2007 using "Save As" and select the 2003 compatibility mode.
Click the Save icon or press the Ctrl - S.
Do a Save As, and pick the 2003 version. It can then be opened by any of the 3 versions. Depending on what is in the original document, it is possible that you could lose some things. Most Excel spreadsheets will not lose anything when they are saved into an earlier version.
