How do you set the interior light to turn on when you open the door on a 1999 Mercedes-Benz E-320?

Get in the car and close the doors. Look at the black buttons on the ceiling next to the rear-view mirror. Press the button with the icon that looks like two doors are open (view from top). Open a door to see if it works. The lights will stay on for about 30 sec. after the door is shut, and then they will fade off.

I have 1999 e320 and have been experiencing same problem of "Light defective ' coming on on the dash board. What I discovered is the death of some bulbs. Because of this, my trafficator speed is a bit faster. My back license plate light bulb and the bulbs that come on when the doors are opened are gone as well.
