Put the engine at top dead center cylinder #1 by removing the plug and bringing the piston to the top. Mark the balancer and timing cover where ever is easier to see. Use an advancing timing light set at 10* and turn the distributor until both marks meet.
There is a gear on the distributor shaft and a gear on the end of the camshaft that it engages with. The gear on the camshaft cannot be removed as it is part of the camshaft. The gear on the distributor shaft can be removed if it is worn; however, this is rare. These two gears must be in proper mesh for the engine to run; one cog off and it will not start. If you need further assistance google ' finding top dead center on a 350 chevy'.
Distributor was removed and put back in the wrong position throwing the engines timing off by 180 degrees.
The camshaft position sensor on a 4.3L engine would be in the distributor.
Usually, NO.
Assuming you have set the engine to #1 TDC and marked the position of the distributor and the position of the rotor, remove the distributor hold-down clamp and it's bolt, then pull the distributor up and out.
if it has a distributor, its in the distributor, if no distributor its at the front of the engine by the crankshaft damper
The distributor cap should have a 1 marked on it On the V8 engines ( regardless of firing order ) the # 1 position on the distributor cap faces to the rear and slightly towards the drivers side of the engine On the 4.9 L ( 300 cubic inch ) straight 6 - the # 1 position on the distributor cap faces away from the engine
The number one plug is the one on the drivers side front of the engine. Therefore the plug wire connected to that plug is number 1 and where it connects to the distributor is the number 1 position on the distributor. If you have removed all the plug wires then you will have to remove the spark plugs, turn the engine over until the number 1 cylinder is at top dead center (TDC) on the compressions stroke. Once it is at TDC then the rotor inside the distributor will be pointing to the number 1 position.
Wherever the distributor rotor is pointing when the #1 piston is at TDC of it's compression cycle. When an engine comes from the factory it's supposed to always be in the same direction, but if the distributor has been removed and the person working on it wasn't too concerned, who knows WHERE it will be pointing. I can't believe that a distributor on a 79 has never been removed, so you'll need to find #1 TDC and figure it out from there.
Where is cam shaft position sensor on a 4.3 engine. Located?
For the 1.6 engine, Its in the distributor.
Need to know what engine you have.
