Skilled fishers know that not all rods are meant for the same activity. This is not to say that they have a collection of dozens, but even amateur fishermen will benefit from having two or three different kinds at their disposal to accommodate the different situations that may arise. Fishing rod confusion can be narrowed down by classifying them into five categories. Many variations are incorporated into each individual rod, but those are preferences. Here are the facts. The first category is Ultra Light Action. Rods in this category are used for small game fishing. For example, an ultra light action rod is perfect for river or small stream fishing, as well as trout and pan fish. The most common variation of ultra light action rods is the length. A good rule of thumb is to opt for a longer rod when the current is heavy. The second category is Light Action. Light action rods are used in the same situations as the ultra light action rods, but are designed more for beginners. This fishing rod is slightly heavier which eliminates small physical mistakes a fisher might make such as jerking the rod. After a fisher has mastered the light action fishing rod, the ultra light action is much easier to manage. The third category is Medium Action. As the name implies, these fishing rods are in the middle of the weight scale. They work well in larger bodies of water and with larger fish. The medium action rods are popular among fishers of walleye and smallmouth bass. The fourth category is Medium Heavy Action. While the previously mentioned fishing rods work well for trolling smaller lures, the medium heavy action rods can accommodate almost any lure. Salmon and steelhead fishing are commonly associated with these rods, but any fishing trip set on catching fish weight 10 to 20 pounds will profit from a medium heavy action rod.The final category is Heavy Action. Just as the ultra light action fishing rods are meant for professionals, so is this end of the spectrum. Big pike, muskie, and any other fish over 20 pounds needs a fishing rod with this strength. The casual fisher can get by with one rod if he knows exactly where his will be fishing and what type of fish is his goal. For the more serious fisher, it is best to have a rod in a few categories.
That depends on the diameter of the rod if it is 1/8" set your amperage between 125 and 140.
They are usually sold by the set. but not much-it is the labor than will hurt. If you threw a rod, they may have to sleeve the bore or even replace the block. If you are replacing 1 piston, I would have all rebored & throw on new rings.
