quite sure that it dumps all information from RAM to hard drive as the RAM is volitie. same thing as hibernation Suspend mode powers down devices that are not needed in order to safe electricity, e.g. it may switch the monitor, sound card or modem off and turn them back on when you return from suspend mode. Hibernation is when the RAM is written to the hard drive and the computer is completely turned off.

Use the up/down arrows to move it to regular mode. The computer will start normally at that point. Just turning your computer off with the switch can cause your hard drive to loose data - which you probably do not want.
