There 3 things that you would need
1) A good Anti-virus which is basically for internet Surfing only. This Anti-virus will also take care of viruses in any USB or Portable storage devices connected to the Computer by scanning it first. Also this type of an Anti-virus is very cheap as compared to others.
2) Configure your Internet Browser Settings it such a way that it does not allow storage any data like for example Cookies onto your computer without your permission. A better way out is to use
a) Mozilla Firefox + 2 Add-ons (SWOT & No Script) - No Script will not allow any script to be run on your computer without your permission (It takes sometime to get used to this add-on). SWOT add-on will give you ratings for each site you access, It also add a icon to your browser which changes colours to Green (Safe) to Red (Unsafe). Configure Mozilla firefox to never remember History
b) Incognito Window in Google Chrome : Wipes out all data downloaded by the Internet site the moment you log out/close the site.
3) Always create weekly savepoints on your computer or take regular backup on a portable storage device which should only be used for data backup. By this you can restore your PC back to the some point where it was running successfully.
