Anorexia is very much so based on culture. Many "modern" and "hip" cultures portray models, actresses, and celebrities as being prettier if they are thinner. Cultures that depict a "thin" ideal have very high reports of eating disorders as women and young girls feel the social pressures to be beautiful by being thin. Meanwhile, countries that do not have a "thin" cultural ideal do not report significant rates of eating disorders at all.
