If its the 4speed auto then theres a fill plug in front that has a red seal around the plug that breaks off with a screwdriver so they know its been opened then you pull the plug. Add your lucas to it then put your plug in. Run the engine until its 90-113 i believe. Shops will use a scan tool to read the sensor. On level ground shift through all your gears, allowing each to engage finally leaving in neutral. Pull the overfill plug on the bottom of the transmission, it should be a hex and let it drain until it is dribbling out. And reinstall your plug. Remember its better to be a lil bit overfilled on fluid in your tranny vs under.

It is important to maintain the fluid levels of a car with the correct fluid types. The transmission fluid type for a 1998 VW Jetta is Universal ATF or ATF 1 fluid.
Something inside the transmission is slipping. To try to avoid the cost of a transmission overhaul try having the transmission fluid and filter changed. You could also try some transmission additive but eventually it will have to be repaired.
OEM fluid is Pentosin Vw Automatic Transmission Fluid ATF1 and that is what I recommend you use.
