You can get the repair manual for Mercedes Benz a160 Avantgarde 1998 at the local mechanic shops.
Get a manual on your car from the parts store and it will tell you haow to remove the door panel if necessary plus tell you how the wiring runs. You just have to trace the voltage.
yes
Read the Haynes Repair manual and it states to either use a special tool (looks like flat bar, forked at the end) or to put the crank in the down position, lift a clean shop rag up and directly behind the crank, and pull up until the clip snaps out. I tried this but still can't see where the clip is that is supposed to be behind the crank. Anyone else have suggestions??
Pull out the U-clip located on the base of the window crank.
Your local auto parts store will sell you an inexpensive tool to do that job. There is a spring clip that has to be removed from behind the handle.

1. On manual window models remove the window crank handle dislodge the clip 2. Remove the outside mirror cover 3. Detach the door handle trim piece and disconnect the door pull mounting screw. Unplug the electrical connector from the power window switch 4. Remove the retaining screws and detach the panel by carefully prying it away from the door

you did not say whether it was a manual, but I will presume from the word knob which is on a manual crank window that it is a manual one. Inside the door is a mechanism that has gears and rails with teeth and if either one is too far away from the driving gear or stripped enough, one or both up and down actions will not happen. If it was an electric one then it could be just an electrical contact on the up side of the switch that activates the window drive that is not working. That said, there is still a gear and rail system for that too. It's just driven by a motor. Rob
