What would cause the drivers side window knob to only roll down and not roll up on a 1998 Ford Escort?

you did not say whether it was a manual, but I will presume from the word knob which is on a manual crank window that it is a manual one. Inside the door is a mechanism that has gears and rails with teeth and if either one is too far away from the driving gear or stripped enough, one or both up and down actions will not happen. If it was an electric one then it could be just an electrical contact on the up side of the switch that activates the window drive that is not working. That said, there is still a gear and rail system for that too. It's just driven by a motor. Rob
