To take off a "V" belt:
1. Loosen the adjuster bolt and the mounting bolt.
2. Move the driven item aside to loosen the tension on the belt, the belt should now come off of the pulley.
If the belt you want to remove is behind still other belts, those belts will come off in the same manner.
To change the alternator belt an a 1985 Chevy Celebrity: 1. Loosen the adjuster bolt and the mounting bolt. 2. Move the alternator to release the belt tension and remove the belt. Reverse to reinstall a new belt.
Generally speaking to take a drive belt off: 1. Loosen the adjuster bolt and the mounting bolt, loosen the belt. 2. Slip the belt off of the pulley. There may be as many as four belts. If the belt you are taking off is behind other belts you will have to take them off first. If that is the case make note of the routing of each belt as you take them off so you will know where to put them back.
It is no more difficult to put a drive belt on a 1985 Chevy Celebrity than it is in most other cars. Just loosen the driven device, move the adjustment in and remove the belt then replace in the reverse order. Of course if the belt you want to replace is the inside most position you will have to go through the process on the outer belts to get to the inner belts, but that is true on any vehicle.
To replace the timing belt tensioner on a 1987 to 1990 Chevrolet Celebrity V6: 1. Use a 3/8" breaker bar to release the belt tension, move the belt out of the way. 2. Remove the single bolt out of the center of the fixed end of the tensioner. The belt tensioner will now come off. 3. Install the replacement tensioner and put the belt back on.
This engine does not have a timing belt, it is gear-driven. Possibly, you have broken gear teeth, causing the timing to be out of order.

To change the serpentine belt on a Chevy Celebrity: 1. Make note of the routing so you can get the belt back correctly. 2. Use appropriate breaker bar or ratchet to release the tensioner then take the old belt off. 3. Put the new belt in place, releasing the tensioner to get the belt over it.
To replace the belts on your 1982 to 1986 Chevrolet Celebrity starting with the outermost belt: First take note of the locations of each belt so you will know where to put them back. Then loosen the adjustment bolt on each driven unit and slide inward to release the tension and remove the belt. It may be necessary to loosen the mounting bolt to slide the unit over. Repeat that procedure for each remaining belt. Reinstall in the reverse order. Rotation is not critical for this kind of belt.
Routing of the serpentine belt depends on which engine your car has as well as whether or not the car has air conditioning. There should be a routing diagram under the hood of the car.
There should be a routing diagram under the hood. If it is the 2.8L V6 the diagram is on a guard above the belt between the power steering pump and the water pump.
The 2001 Chevrolet Cavalier 2.2 liter engine drive belt diagram can be found in the owners manual. The belt diagram can also be obtained from most auto-parts stores, when you purchase the belt.
On the belt tensioner you will see a spot to insert a half inch drive breaker bar or ratchet to move tensioner off belt.
