no, do not "pop" of the covers, u will break the covers. fold down the rear seat or pull the rear seat back out. there is a bezel with 4 push pins, remove, u have to pick up the rear deck pad (keep covers attached) u have to un-plug the speakers from the trunk, but they come out the top, no screws, un-clip speakers and slide them out added by kooldaddy 08-24-09 Work the side window C-pillar moulding out AFTER popping out the vinyl covered panels below the quarter windows. Hope you do it on a warm (not hot or cold) day, as this will allow the panels to bend slightly but not break or take a permanent set. PS It's a beaatch to get the shelf back in too.
The front are 8in,,the rear are 61/2 and the subwoofer on the rear deck is 12in
You don't have to remove it, but just unclip the rear seats so they could fold down. Gives you more room to work. That's what I did when I did my rear speakers in my 01 civic.

They are like component speakers, The tweeters are wired separate and it all hooks up to the factory amp that's located on the left side of the trunk behind the carpet
I just changed the speakers in my 01 about a month ago. The speaker covers are mounted "TO" the rear deck. You have to remove the rear deck to change the speakers out. I left the factory covers on, because I wasn't sure I could mount the aftermarket ones back and look good. I believe they were held on with a washer and pop rivot type of setup. Hope this helps
I bought '01 GT rebuilt with no stereo or speakers. Installed Sony xplod all around .I used rear panel holding speakers and existing speaker covers to mount 6x9's.(cut out oval using hack saw) speakers look real good and sound nice. also used same technique to mount 3 way, 5" xplods in front door panels.
escape 01 rear wiper dosen't work
