Basically - you don't ! Reptiles lack the intelligence to form affection with either members of their own species - or humans ! It simply tolerates you because its basic instinct tells it you're not going to harm it !

∙ 13y agothis may be different in specific cases, but in my experience when the dragon is feeling sociable, he will climb up the side of the tank and wait for me to notice him (i have a mesh tank). if you have a glass tank, you will see him scratching at the sides.
However, if your dragon is fairly new to the home and the environment, you may have to instigate the handling. my beardie is now almost a year old and he has only started asking to get out in the past month. the most important things are to watch his behavior, and try picking him up as he does things that are a bit different then his usual. every animal has their own personality, and will react to situations slightly differently.
