Look online, read books about different breeds, ask a professional for help. If you got your cat from a breeder, go back and ask what the parents were, they should know. Pedigree cats and kittens that are sold come with papers which say the breed of the cat the new owners are purchasing. If you do not have papers, then the bloodline of the cat cannot be confirmed and is classed as a Domestic Shorthair or Longhair.

Some breeds of cats have special markings, so for example if you have a Maine Coon (a large breed of cat) then look for a mark above the forehead looks like a "M". However, all cats with the tabby colouring have an "M" on the forehead.

A good resource is TICA (The International Cat Association.) They have pictures of all of their recognized breeds, which you can compare your cat to (see below in Related Links)

If your cat is just a "regular" housecat, what you have is called a "Domestic Shorthair." (Breed names for local feline stock varies from country to country.) If so, you do have a "real" breed of cat - owners from other countries will keep American Domestic Shorthairs as pets, because they are widely believed to be friendly and hardy.

If you got your cat from a shelter, it's pretty likely that it is just a mixed breed, making it very difficult to discover its origins. But some classic examples of cat breeds are:

Siamese, American Shorthair, Maine Coon, Manx (no tail), Persian, Abyssinian. There a few, just Google some photos of them and maybe your cat will resemble one!

On Maine Coon cats' forehead, there are normally stripes resembling the letter "M" for Maine Coon. Maine Coon cats also have long whiskers and a long bushy tail. Maine Coon cats are also quite large.

A breed is usually a cat with a pedigree that is in some group's database such as the Cat Fanciers. What is a breed in one group might not be a breed in another. If you want to establish a new breed, you must contact them.

You can usually have your vet find this out, they will tell you what breed it is (unless it's really cross-bred).

All pets have a chart that tell their father/mother. Then their mother/father. That's how pet shop workers know what breed a cat is.

There is no way to tell just by the colors what breed that cat might be. It is most likely mixed breed, though.

What if your cat is a black cat what type of cat is it?

Unless you got the cat and pedigree papers from a breeder, it is almost impossible to tell what breed it is. Many breeds and mixed breeds of cats can be black. A breed of a cat cannot be depicted by a single trait alone.

What type of cat breed is a Dark grey short hair domestic with small white dot on chest?

You can't tell the breed by looking at the colour of a cat. It could be a range of breeds, or most likely a mixed-breed.

Is there a way to learn what breed your cat is?

I would go Check the vet and see if he can tell the breed. Alternatively, you can find images of cats identified online or there are books at the library that show cat breeds. However, unless your cat came with papers stating the breed, it is impossible to accurately tell what breed (or breeds) your cat may be. Cats that are mixed breeds or have no obvious or known breed in them are called moggies, or Domestic Shorthairs/Domestic Longhairs.

Some Egyptian Mau do have stripes. But it doesn't mean your cat isn't a mixed breed. The only way you could find out for sure is to find out the breed of it's parents.

How do you identify a purebred cat?

yellow or amber eyes I believe.Another AnswerOne single trait (such as eye colour) does not depict if a cat is a pure breed or not. Moggies (mixed breeds) can have any eye colour, depending on their genes. The only way to really tell is if the cat comes with papers, or a DNA test. Even mixed or cross breeds can look similar to a certain breed, but again, its often difficult to determine correctly just by looking at the cat.

Why are cats called mogies?

'Moggy' is one of the terms for a mixed-breed domestic cat.
