Nissan head gaskets have a very low failure rate. Now if the engine has been overheated badly, all bets are off. If you have a cooling system pressure tester, you can remove all the spark plugs, add pressure to the cooling system and crank the engine. If you get coolant coming from the spark plug ports when the engine is cranking, pretty good chance you've got a warped or cracked head and at least a failed head gasket. You can also buy a chemical tester to see if you have got exhaust gas in the coolant. Either way, the head has to come off and plan on spending lots of money.
