It's a male thing to do. Some men are very confident and will outwardly hug a male friend, but it could be risky in your case so the arm around his neck and pulling him a little roughly too you is still masculinity acceptable. Also a slap on the back and saying, 'Hey, just wanted to let you know you're my best buddy and I think the world of you.' Throughout history there have been many great buddies that stick together through their lifetime.
