I am not sure that the egr sensor aka DPFE can be tested. Normally you will get a service engine soon light along with a code but I can't remember exactly which code it is. They are notorious for going bad on these vehicles. They can cause a range of problems from a bucking engine to a poor idle, and when they are not functioning your fuel economy suffers. On the Vulcan single cam 3.0 they are located in plain view on the front of the intake manifold just beside the throttle body, two bolts, two vacuum lines, and a wiring connector is all there is to changing them. On the DOHC they are a little more difficult, they are located on the driver side rear of the engine in a tight area to get to unless you have small hands, the rubber lines that attach to them will likely need to be replaced also since they bake to the old sensor due to the heat. Not a very expensive fix but a VERY common problem.
