get a pointer ==Answer= try using a vacuumm gauge hook the guage up to where the distributor is plugged into start the engine advance the distributor until the vacuum guage stops climbing the back it off one degree good luck

It is possible that the harmonic balancer has spun.check the rubber around the balancer for cracks or decay.If so replace balancer...

The timing mark is one the Harmonic balancer and the pointer is attached to the timing cover. Roll the motor over to the timing mark, the be sure and mark the number one plug {marked on the intake manifold} the position of the rotor pointer on the distributer.

The timing marks should be on the driver's side of the car down by the harmonic balancer on a small plate. theres usually a "pointer" on the drivers side. its attached with two of the front cover bolts. When you look down at your Harmonic balancer there should be something about it that you see that looks kinda like saw teeth with numbers in the gaps. The zero or line whichever year you have should be on the Harmonic balancer.
Go to Autozone and tell them u need a harmonic balancer puller
