∙ 11y agoIf the books you're trying to restore were bought by you, they will always reside on the Amazon server as being part of your Archive. In order to pull them down to your iPad, you need to install the Kindle app for your iPad, log into your Amazon account via (for example) a PC/Mac, and "register" the iPad as one of the devices for your account. Then, log in to the Kindle app on your iPad using the same userID and password that you use on your PC/Mac. This will allow your iPad to pull down anything you have in your Amazon archive.
Note that there are some situations where wrangling the Archive can get complicated. For example, consider this:
- Alice and Bob each have Kindle devices (actual Kindle, iPad with Kindle app, or whatever). The Amazon account belongs to Alice, and they share their digital contact. Bob downloads a book (Interview with the Vampire, as an example), from their shared archive, and it's now stored on his device.
- Alice and Bob get a divorce. Alice kicks Bob off of her Amazon account so he can no longer see her archive. She "de-registers" all of his devices from her account.
- Surprisingly, the book that Bob was reading (Interview with the Vampire) remains on his device(s) - namely, the ones where he did a "download from archive." He can even register the device with his new Amazon account (he signed up after Alice kicked him to the curb), and keep reading the book from Alice's archive but it will never appear in his archive unless he buys it again.
Bottom line: If you bought the content and it's on your Amazon account, to restore the content simply log onto the Amazon account with your Kindle app once the app is installed on the iPad. But, if you didn't buy content (or you cannot gain control of the account that did buy it), the book cannot be downloaded again (or restored, in this case) until you pay for a new copy.
